Maggie Macleod was weary of life with a soul sickness that ate into every fiber of her being. In a mad way, it did not seem strange to her that she should be on the way to High Court to stand trial for the murder of her husband. Her marriage seemed to have been one long dreary desert lit by flares of cruelty.

In a mad way, it did not seem strange to her that she should be on the way to High Court to stand trial for the murder of her husband. Her marriage seemed to have been one long dreary desert lit by flares of cruelty...

In setting out to clear her name Jennie Tremaine brings to life one of the most delightfully original stories to come out in years.

I usually love Jennie Tremaine aka Marion Chesney's stories. I bought this book blindly, because if I had read the blurb I would never have bought this book. This one I had to skim, because I wanted to toss the book several times. It was so depressing. There was the abusive father who sells Maggie to her husband. There was the sexually and physically abusive husband (personally do not like reading about abuse by spouse), the abused, depressed heroine, the unlikable Earl who marries Maggy in a handfast while she is being held for the murder of her husband because of a bet and later treats her, I thought, badly. He wants to marry someone else, Mrs Murray, a widow, after the trial and Maggie is set free, so Maggie and he decide to disregard this marriage. Throughout the rest of the book he idolizes Mrs Murray, who treats Maggie horribly, almost to the end of the book and continues to "unintentionally" hurt the heroine, even though wanting to marry another woman he flirts and kisses Maggie. Heroine doesn't seem to have a backbone because she knew he wants to marry another woman, yet lets him make love to her (not fully). I guess classic abused woman syndrome, use to any abuse that comes her way, low self-esteem.

I admit the mystery of the murder of Maggie's husband was interesting and the villian was not that obvious. I would have wanted to read more of the mystery of the murder than reading about poor Maggie's life and the dense Earl.

Easy to enjoy.
Very good, quite a unique interesting plot. Highly recommended. Good for a cold day to sit and read with cuppa!
A bit formulaic but fun. Perfect beach read, and allows even the most jaded to enjoy the guilty secret of a bit of bodice ripping.
I read this series on KU and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for these books. This one is about an h, who is accused of murdering her late husband. The H is an Earl, recently returned from India. The H takes a drunken bet with the villain and when he loses, he has to 'marry' the h. The h is convinced that she's about to be hung for murder when the jury returns a surprising verdict of "not proven". I was hoping that this would be a marriage of convenience story but sadly it isn't. The H is pretty wishy washy and alternates in being attracted to the h and then believing her to be a murderer. There's the mystery of who was responsible for the murders running through the story but it wasn't good enough to save this book from mediocrity.
Maggie is treated like a chattel by her father and he hands her over to Inspector Macleod who marries her and moves her to his home Glasgow. For a year Maggie endures his brutalities until he dies of arsenic poisoning and she is put on trial for his murder. The Earl of Strathain who sees part of her trial doesn't believe she is guilty. A drunken bet forces him to `marry' her and he feels duty bound to rescue her from the mob when she is not convicted of the murder.

Maggie is taken to live with the Earl's aunt Sarah Rochester and gradually regains her health. But a shadow continues to hang over her - who did kill her husband? What follows is part love story and part mystery as Maggie and her friends decide there is only one way to dispel the shadow and that is to find out who did kill her husband.

I enjoyed this story even though it was much less light hearted than some in this series. Some of the characters are very unpleasant indeed but the darkness is redeemed by Aunt Sarah who is one of those older women who M C Beaton does so well. I liked Maggie too though sometimes I wanted to talk some sense into her. I thought the darker side of Glasgow life at the start of the twentieth century was well done and convincing.

If you're looking for a mystery novel with a dash of romance and some interesting characters then try `Maggie'.
Old stories written by dead authors, new stories written by authors still alive, can be just as good to read today as they were when written. Reading about Regency England is my favorite time period to enjoy. I picked this story because the author's style of storytelling matches my reading interest level. An easy story for an easy read.
I am a fan of Marion Chesney Beaton's novels and Maggie is one of the historical ones. I'm not put off by the North American spelling - that may be due to the editing. The story and characters are strong and entertaining. Very hard to put down this book.
